Gene White Whips Field At Riverside Speedway

April 11, 1950

Agawam, Mass – Gene White, gifted stock car jockey from Manchester, Conn., who is experiencing his second season at chauffeuring souped-up vehicles, captured the Easter Special 25-lap feature race at Riverside Speedway Saturday night before a crowd of 3,354 fans who braved chilled winds. White raced across the finish line a full car length ahead of Neil Cole of Hawthorne, N.J. who wasn’t a real threat throughout the entire race.

Restart Needed
White took the lead on the fourth lap, but a spinout developed which called for a restart.

The second start was made in Indian fashion and the Manchester pilot was able to retain his position and remain out front. Herby Goldie of Bridgeport and Cole, together with “Spinner” Smith, offered White the best of competition. Smith ran into a bit of hard luck on the 18th lap by blowing a tire, thus causing his retirement.

Smith of New London, Conn., who made his second appearance of the season at Eddie Carroll’s oval set a new track record in the second qualifying heat by posting a mark of 2:45.11. The former record was 2:45.20, engineered by Cole while in competition last year.
