Elton Hill Captures Plainville Honors

From 1965

Elton Hill captured the 30-lap Open Competition feature race for modifieds and sportsman cars Saturday night at the Plainville Stadium. Joining Elty in the winner’s circle was JoJo Farone who also won a thriller when he snarled the 30-lap Novice feature.

In winning the open main Hill took the lead in the 25th lap and just made it to the finish line first as he edged out Bob Vivari by only a foot. Maynard Forette roared home third followed by Wally Miller. Ray Beckman drove a good race as he closed in tight for fifth spot. The tow leading point getters ran into some bad luck Saturday night. Tony Membrino ran into trouble when he tangled with Harry Bliss on the 19th lap putting both drivers out for the night while Sparky Belmont also had to retire to the pit area on the sixth lap when he became involved with Tom Casella on the backstretch.

JoJo Farone took over on the 25th lap of the Novice race to finish just in of Harry Salata. It was a nip and tuck battle between these two drivers all the way. Joe Scarzella placed third followed by young Johnny Manafort and Larry Vaughn in that order. Heat winners in the Open Competition were Miller and Forette. In the Novice Skip Ziegler and Farone were the winners. Fran Forino won the consolation event.

Wally Miller, just out of Bridgeport University,  finished third
and won his heat. 1965 would be his only year of full time
competition at Plainville Stadium. Wally would go on to a
long career which ended with his induction into the New
England Auto Racers Hall of Fame in 2002. By the way,
Wally would later be better known in racing as Ray Miller.
